
Naukuchiatal situated 28 km from Nainital and 4 km from Bhimtal is a small town perched at an altitude of 1,220 mts above sea level is a must-visit for tourists looking for a picture perfect destination accompanied with serene environs and enchanting meadows and fields. The beautiful Lake is named 'Naukuchia Tal' because it actually has nine corners and hence derived the name 'Nine Cornered Lake' in English; however, this lake was initially spelled as 'Nokoocheea' Lake during the British rule in 1815. It is consistently fed by an underwater perennial spring that keeps the level of water always high and 40 mts deep making it the deepest Lake in Nainital District. It measures almost 1 km long and 0.5 km wide and fringed with tall oak trees and pastures fed by this lake. A myth that surrounds the lake is if you view all the nine corners of this lake at one shot, you will attain salvation and another myth states that you will disappear into thin air which definitely sounds unbelievable but worth a try for daring hearts.
Naukuchiatal is also the right place to admire a variety of colourful butterflies and Trans Himalayan migratory birds that feeds and breeds on the Lake offering a good venue for bird watching. You can trek through a 4 km foot trail that leads you through secluded paths sprinkled with blossoming wild flowers and diverse fauna.
